History of the Eastwood Campus
The recent history of the 6400 South Sunbury Road, Westerville, Ohio, property goes back to 1968 when a prominent Columbus-area couple, William H. and Dorothy M. Davis, purchased the 22.2 acre plot from the Ohio Holding Company.
Mr. Davis had served in the United States Navy in World War II, honorably discharged with rank of Lt. Commander, and later graduated from The Ohio State University. He became a highly successful developer of shopping centers, apartment buildings, and residential subdivisions. He developed most of the residential property north of State Route 161 between I-71 and Sunbury Road, including Sunbury Woods.
In 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Davis decided to build a home on the Sunbury Road property they had purchased in 1968. The Gillette Construction Company was the builder. The large white brick home included a spacious entry foyer with two fireplaces, a guest room with bath, and a grande parlour, plus dining room and kitchen. Upstairs was a large master bedroom suite with fireplace, both and dressing areas; downstairs a full basement with laundry and storage.
Construction of the home was completed in 1973. A five-car garage across the driveway from the home was added at a later date.
The Davises did a lot of entertaining. And they were active in professional, social, and church organizations and prominent in support of charitable causes. Earlier in her life, Mrs. Davis had been an aviator and teacher of celestial navigation.
Mr. Davis passed away in September 1984. Mrs. Davis died in 1996. Following the death of Mrs. Davis, the home was occupied for several years by Mr. William Wells, a nephew of Mrs. Davis. Later, he left the property and the ownership of the home and land passed to the Alumni Association of The Ohio State University. The Alumni Association sold the property on August 5, 2005, and it became the home campus of the Eastwood Seventh-day Adventist Church and Eastwood Junior Academy.
