Redemption in Romans
This Week's Lesson: The Person of Romans 7

Last week, we learned that upon baptism in Jesus, we "died to sin." (Romans 6:2) We learned that this meant that we were "set free from sin." (Romans 6:18) How did that work out for you this past week? Did you find that you had a sin-free week? Did you enjoy living a perfect life? If not, what do you think is the problem? If you had paid closer attention last week would you be free from sin? Or, are you having a problem measuring Paul's writings against the reality of your life? Since the Bible is the true and faultless word of God, we need to dig deeper to find out what God is trying to teach us. Let's dive into Paul's continuing message!

Points to ponder during the week:

  • What does grace mean and what does law mean?
  • If it has been awhile since you have examined yourself in the mirror of God's law, take time to do so now.  What warts and blemishes do you find?
  • Like Paul, how do you struggle with your wretchedness?  Is it ever a good thing to cease this struggle? Why or why not?
  • How many times are personal pronouns I or me used in Romans 7:7-25?  How many times is the Holy Spirit mentioned in these same verses? What do these numbers imply about our ability to subdue the flesh in our own strength?
  • Is your spiritual autobiography similar to Paul's? What would it say about your struggle to be free of sin and your attempts to obey God's law?
  • Why do we often question our salvation when we struggle with the flesh?

Friend, do you see that you cannot win the war against sin? Do you see that eternal death is your fate? The only way out is to accept Jesus' life and death on your behalf.  Will you today accept Jesus' offer? Will you be baptized, if you have not been already, so that the penalty of the law in your case has been paid and you can look forward to life eternal?
